Polyurethane-98
A cosmetic ingredient used as binding, nail conditioning in skincare, haircare, and personal-care products sold in the European Union.
What is it?
Polyurethane-98 is a urethane polymer that is made in several steps. First, a polyether diol is made by reacting 1,2-butylene oxide with Propylene Glycol. A second diol polymer is made by condensing Adipic Acid and Isophthalic Acid with 3-methylpentane-1,5-diol. These two polymers are mixed and then reacted with Trimethylhexamethylene Diisocyanate to form a polyurethane. The polyurethane is capped with Hydroxyethyl Acrylamide.
What does it do?
Polyurethane-98 is listed in the EU cosmetic ingredient inventory with the following declared functions:
-

holds the components of a formulation together, especially in pressed powders and compact makeup
-
Nail conditioning
improves the appearance, feel, or condition of fingernails and toenails
